The Ultimate Beginner's Course

Learn Illustration for Skull Artworks with
Artist, Matt Heath

Do you love to draw and want to improve? Do you like drawing skulls or learning anatomy? What about experimenting with different mediums such as pencils, watercolours, ink and markers? I totally do and I want to share my passion with you. In this course I will teach you basic anatomy of a skull and how I stylise it..

Together we will create study sketches in pencil, look at colour and values with watercolour sketches and also using pen and markers to create a vibrant design. I will show you how to design a skull-based character and talk about my thought process along the way. With a final artwork in mind I will show you simple ways to practice and improve. We will explore different character ideas, different mediums and also composition. Watch me create a final artwork and learn how to do the same yourself. Learn to become more confident in your art and the keys to developing a unique style.

This course is for people who like to draw, like to explore and would love to improve their skills and develop a unique style. By the end of the course you will have an eye for skull proportions and details and learn the importance of practice and composition. You will have fun learning about different approaches and materials to work with. You will also learn how to sketch and how to make a finished artwork.

Hello!

I am a Sydney based designer and illustrator who specialises in character design and everything skull related! I have worked on projects for Konami, Nintendo, Blizzard, PlayStation, and Wargaming. I started my career as a graphic designer and over the years rekindled my childhood passion for drawing. I’ve been fortunate to be able to work as an illustrator for many fantastic clients. I teach character design and illustration as well as work professionally as a graphic designer. I love to sketch and recognise the importance of learning new skills as well as practicing consistently to gain them. I love checking out art shops, trying out new mediums and I love to share my knowledge with other people.

Q: How did you first start doing what you do?

After many years as a Sydney designer I moved to Berlin on an artist’s visa. After this I soon began contributing artwork for various international publications which led to client work and published tutorials. I have worked in the films, games and advertising industries. I also teach character design and illustration and run a meetup group for international and Sydney artists. My social media presence has led to me drawing a lot of skulls – a practice that began with simple studies. From this practice, I developed ways to quickly create quality artworks while learning new skills at the same time.
